Andy is a vision-focused, technology literate educational leader with over 23 years of administrative and classroom experience at the elementary, middle school, high school and college levels. Andy is a native of eastern Oregon and worked in school districts in the Portland, Oregon area before moving overseas in August of 2001.
Andy currently serves the Shanghai American School community as the Deputy Superintendent and is the supervising administrator for the Pudong Campus (enrollment over 1200 students). He is in his 8th academic year at Shanghai American School and initially served as an elementary principal and middle school principal for the school before being selected for his current role. During his tenure as the Deputy Superintendent, Mr. Torris has lead the SAS Educational Programs office through a variety of initiatives and efforts including a full Western Association of Schools and Colleges accreditation. Mr. Torris oversees educational programs including curriculum, instruction, assessment, and instructional technology for a school of almost 3000 students on two campuses.
Prior to working at Shanghai American School Mr. Torris served as a K-12 principal and supervising campus administrator for International Schools Group-Yanbu International School in Yanbu-Al Sinaiyah, Saudi Arabia. He served that school community for 4 years. Mr. Torris has also worked in schools in Oregon. He began his career as an elementary classroom teacher and taught for 10 years before moving into the administrative role. His administrative career has included work as an elementary management assistant, middle school vice principal, elementary principal, PK-12 principal, and middle school principal.
Mr. Torris has been a workshop presenter at recent EARCOS administrative conferences, has taught college courses in technology for preservice teachers, supervised student teachers, and is an author for two educational blogs. Andy’s writings can be found on Sentiments on Common Sense (http://www.sentimentsoncommonsense.com/) and on LeaderTalk (http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/LeaderTalk), an Education Week Blog for school leaders, by school leaders. Andy is a founding board member of the EARCOS Learning 2.0 Conference. He also serves as a board member for the Center for the Advancement of School Technology Leadership in Education (CASTLE).
Andy is married to Ms. Amanda DeCardy. Amanda is originally from Illinois and currently serves as a technology integration specialist for Shanghai American School. Amanda is a National Board of Professional Teaching Standards certified teacher, and Apple Distinguished Educator. Amanda has a degree in East Asian Studies focusing on Japanese Language, Culture and History. Amanda is a frequent conference presenter at EARCOS and NESA conferences, as well as at the recent Apple Leadership Summit in Hong Kong.
Andy and Amanda have two children. Madeline is 9 years old and Amelia is 5 years old.
